Back-up and archive specialist CommVault has announced support for Red Hat Virtualisation 4, the open source company's kernel-based virtual machine powered virtualisation platform.
Red Hat Virtualisation 4 is built on the company's enterprise Linux distribution. It provides a centralised management platform for both Linux- and Windows-based workloads.
It also provides applications that can be used within containers and as cloud native applications.
Customers can use Commvault’s Data Platform to provided better protection for data and workloads across a broad range of hypervisors, including Red Hat Virtualisation, VMware, Microsoft Hyper-V, Citrix Xen, and Nutanix Acropolis Hypervisor.
{loadposition sam08}Such workloads will also be afforded better protection during movement from hypervisors to public cloud providers.
Features of Commvault's support of Red Hat Virtualisation:
- Integrates with the Red Hat Virtualisation Manager and uses native APIs to perform all necessary functions.
- Offers the ability to perform complete VM image back-ups without disruption of running workloads.
- Protection operations are policy-driven and leverage an auto-discovery mechanism that maps the right virtual machines to the correct policy.
- Protection operations distribute load across KVM hosts. Back-up proxies (which are VMs themselves) can more easily scale as needed, and can intelligently allocate streams to process VMs more efficiently.
- Client side deduplication enables customers to reduce data transfer to the Commvault back-up library, helping to expedite the back-up process and reduce impact to networks and the space required for virtual machine back-up data copies which can be stored to disk, tape, or a cloud library.
- Commvault’s hot-add methodology for protecting virtual machines makes it easier for customers to deploy and to scale-out while being centrally managed through a single operational console.
- No explicit limits on size of back-ups, number of virtual machines, or size of virtual machines that can be backed up.
